Watch Our Un-Staged Reading of Twelfth Night – 2023

In August 2023, we produced our first live event: An “Un-Staged Reading” of TWELFTH NIGHT (or what you will). A two-night event, performed in the Conover Studio at Live Arts in Charlottesville. The performance featured Villeins members as well as several guest performers.

ABOUT THE READING

After spending several months studying the play, the VILLEINS pulled together this unique and magical event. Our “motley” look found its first form thanks to everyone bringing decor and lighting to contribute to the setting. Lamps and scarves and flowers and stools were added to the furnishings already available at Live Arts, creating in just a few minutes, a cornucopia of colors and textures.

THE FOOTNOTES

It is part of our mission as Villeins to provide insights into the content and context of Shakespeare’s work to help our audience better understand the language and the world of the plays. For Twelfth Night, we compiled a digital “Footnotes” guide broken down by act and scene to help illuminate some of the more challenging or obscure words and references.

THE FUTURE OF UN-STAGED READINGS

Twelfth Night was always meant to be the first in our series of these “Un-Staged Readings” which seek to provide a timeless, living-room-like ambience where the words come alive off the page even with the scripts in our hands. We absolutely plan to present more of these!
